When I saw this pottery barn wooden american flag, I fell in love.
So naturally, I decided to build one myself.
I already had white and blue paint from other projects, so I just needed red.
I went to Hobby Lobby and picked out some red acrylic paint.
While I was there, I also grabbed some star stickers, we'll get to those in a minute.
We had some 1x2s in the garage, so I used those first, and then I bought a few additional ones.
I used my husband's new mitre saw to cut the 1x2s to the length I wanted.
(I'm loving that new saw!)
I needed 13 boards at 42" so I was able to get two peices out of each 1x2.
The next thing I did was lay all the boards out together and
determine how I wanted everything to look.
I taped off the square for the stars and painted it white,
then I painted the rest off the boards red and white.
Here is where the star stickers come in.
I arranged the stickers to my satisfaction.
I had to rearrange them a few times before they all lined up the way I wanted.
I went back over the stickers and made sure they were all stuck down properly.
Then I painted the whole square blue.
Once the paint was mostly dry, I pulled up the stickers.
You can see that they didn't turn out perfectly.
I didn't really mind, since I was planning on sanding it down and distressing it afterward.
I let the paint dry overnight before I fastened everything together.
I cut three more pieces of 1x2 to 20", the height of the flag.
These are going to hold the whole thing together.
I turned all the boards paint side down and lined them up,
then I used liquid nails wood glue to glue the three 20" boards to the back of the flag.
Once everything was the way I wanted it to be,
I got out our air compressor and nail gun.
I really just went to town with the nail gun, as you can see in this picture below.
I attached picture hanging hardware to the back and hung it in our living room.
Here is the finished project!
Happy DIYing everyone!
